Q&As with Jordan Bass

Jordan, you’ve been employed at AHT since June 2018. Tell us about your journey at AHT.

I was hired as a general laborer and took an opening on 2nd shift as an equipment operator in the fall of that year. In April 2022, I was promoted to technician, and in November of 2024 then promoted to 2nd shift supervisor. I have attended a few different leadership classes at Hawkeye Community College that I have really benefited from and applied in my role at AHT.

What does a typical day look like for you as Production Supervisor at our MidPort Blvd. location in Waterloo, Iowa?

I usually take a hot lap around the shop to see which vessels are running, that way I’ll have an idea of which vessels to keep an eye on throughout the night. After that, I find the 1st shift supervisors and see if they have any jobs that will need priority, and will direct the team from there. The majority of the time, the team clocks in and begins working on jobs on their own.

Did you know about heat treat prior to working at AHT? What were your initial thoughts when you started working at AHT?

I had heard of the company but didn’t have a clue what the actual processing of parts entailed. I was glad to find out that I was able to work with a group of guys and learn by watching and asking them questions, rather than having to work alone, trying to figure things out by myself. It was also very hot inside during the summer when I first started. Thankfully, the A/C unit has since been upgraded and is much more comfortable.

AHT has a lot of different employee events. Tell us which event(s) are your favorite and why?

I would say my favorite event is our tailgate/cookout we have at the end of the summer. AHT grills burgers, and we have a bags (cornhole) tournament. I grew up going to Iowa football games and tailgating, so whenever I get a chance to play bags in somewhat of a competitive setting, I get excited.

How do you like to spend your time outside of work?

Usually, I like to stay at home. If I do leave the house, I’m either hanging out with family and friends, typically golfing or grabbing a few drinks at a bar. I have many nieces and nephews who are in various sports that I like to go and watch, too.

What is one thing people may not know about you?

Hit my only hole in one at an AHT golf outing. AHT coworkers Tyler Odneal, Dan Sager, Armando Silva, and Isaac Buzynski were all there to witness it. I have been playing golf since I was seven, and it was really cool to celebrate with all of those guys. I have the ball sitting on a shelf in my house.

What is an accomplishment that you are proud of?

I bought a house right after my 20th birthday. I was still living at my parents' house, so I thought it was about time to move out. I bought it in April 2020, and I was able to take advantage of the COVID-19 interest rates. I believe I was the first of all my friends to buy a house, so I’ll always be able to brag about that to them.

What is one thing people may not know about Advanced Heat Treat Corp.?

AHT is very generous with PTO, and the longer you work at AHT, the more you can earn. They also allow you to carry over any PTO you may not have used throughout the year. Jordan Bass Iowa Hawkeyes

One of AHT’s core values is passion. What are you passionate about?

Any of the teams I’m a fan of. Some may say they affect my mood too much, good or bad, but I say that’s what being a fan is all about.

If a customer were to visit our corporate facility… do you have any recommendations that they should try to do in the Cedar Valley?

There is a small sports bar & grill in Waterloo called Damons. They have jumbo fried wings with various sauces to choose from. My favorite sauce is chipotle ranch. Their pizza is also very good.
