Carburizing
During the process, carbon is diffused into the surface of the parts at elevated temperatures then quenched, resulting in a hard surface for wear resistance and a soft core for ductility.
Typical materials include low carbon alloy steels (4120, 8620, etc.) & low carbon steels (1018, 1117, etc.). Learn more about the process & see carburizing in action (video).
