Q&As with Quinton Wehling
You’ve been employed at AHT since 2012. How did you learn about AHT and what has kept you here?
Some high school friends were already working here, so I joined them while attending Hawkeye Community College. As I was finishing my degree, Bill Cowell (former Vice President of Operations) approached me about joining the maintenance team. I took an internship, which eventually led to a full-time position. The main reason I've stayed at AHT is the people I work with every day.
As electro-mechanical technician, what does your typical day look like?
Any given day can range from routine preventive maintenance tasks—such as greasing machines, inspecting components, and calibrating controls—to situations that require immediate attention.
During the summer months, AHT will host a series of events for their employees such as grill-outs, the annual safety event and eventually our annual cornhole tournament. Tell us which event(s) are your favorite and why?
The yearly tailgate event is my favorite—it gives everyone at the plant a chance to connect and lets you see a different side of the people you work with every day. Plus, you get paid to hang out, eat good food, and play cornhole—what's not to like? [Pictured to the right is Quinton grilling for one of the employee tailgating events.]
When you’re not working, how do you like to spend your free time?
That depends on the season. In the fall and winter, I spend most of my time in the woods chasing whitetails (deer) or helping out with harvest when I can. Spring is more laid-back—usually just hanging out with friends, maybe taking a vacation somewhere warm, and waiting for the weather to turn. Summer is all about golfing, playing volleyball, and baling hay.
What is one thing people may not know about Quinton Wehling?
Our bowling team with AHT employees (Chase Gibbs, Caden Kickbush, Devin Dorfman, Jacob Sherman and myself) won the league our first and only year playing…not because we were good but because of our handicap.
AHT has purchased some new equipment, robotics, and is currently expanding. Tell us about your involvement with those.
I’ve been involved in discussions about relocating existing equipment and planning the layout of the new building to maximize the available space. With the upcoming expansion—hopefully in the near future—the maintenance team will have a lot on our plate. We'll be responsible for moving current equipment and installing the new machinery that will go in the new building.
What is an accomplishment – professional or personal – that you are proud of?
We recently transitioned our preventive maintenance schedule—along with other processes—into a new software program. I was glad to play a key role in setting up our plant in the new system and helping us go live on the platform back in July.
One of AHT’s core values is ‘passion.’ What are you passionate about?
The family aspect of AHT…the way the company and individuals within the company are generous when unfortunate circumstances fall on another team member.
What kind of tasks does the maintenance team perform to ensure our customers are getting great heat treat results and/or fast turnaround?
Our main responsibility is keeping the machines running smoothly, which we do by following a scheduled preventive maintenance program. This helps minimize unexpected downtime that could lead to longer turnaround times and disrupt production.
