Meet Adam Dehl

Q&As with Adam Dehl

Adam, you’ve held a variety of roles at AHT. How do your previous positions help you to serve our customers better?

I feel holding all of these different positions with several types of heat treat helps me to answer a wide range of heat treat questions. From carburizing to ion nitriding to magnetic particle inspection, my knowledge of these processes help me to assist our customers and direct them to the best treatment for their parts.

Lately, you’ve been doing a lot of research on induction hardening equipment. Tell us more.

While we have been offering induction for decades, I was not as involved with it until the last couple of years. I’ve taken it as a personal challenge to learn/understand and I am so glad I have. I’ve gotten to be part of a team that is analyzing the current equipment and putting together a plan to update our machines in order to satisfy our customers’ needs. We have purchased two brand new induction machines that I have had the opportunity to see being built in our vendor’s shop. Needless to say, we are very excited for these new machines to be installed to help us improve our turnaround time and general efficiency.

(UPDATE: The new induction units are in-house now. Learn more about induction hardening in our blog "Induction Hardening: The Pros and Cons".)

When you’re not working, how do you like to spend your free time?

I love to coach kids - my children especially. I have spent the past 25 years coaching youth baseball and softball, and to this day, I still get players that are all grown up coming up to me and saying “hey coach”. It feels great to know that they remember their experience positively. I also absolutely love to fish - something I did with my dad when I was young, and we still take time to do this together to this day.

What is one thing people may not know about Adam Dehl?

My entire family on the Dehl side was the first and only family to be inducted into the Waterloo Optimist Club Hall of Fame.

What is one thing our customers may not know about AHT?

How family-oriented we are.

Speaking of family-oriented, you have a daughter who also works at AHT. Tell us why you recommended AHT to her.

Besides being an excellent and fair place to work, I knew that the experience she could gain, while I could be there to guide her, would prove valuable in whatever career path she chooses. She has a strong concept of the entire flow of the facility and we both can talk about different situations that arise in a workplace. I love being around my kids and my work, so it was a no-brainer for me.

Now, a series of quick random questions:

  • Favorite Movie: Dances with Wolves
  • First Job: Hy-Vee (my dad was my first boss too)
  • Biggest Fear: Heights
  • Favorite Food: Steak
  • Least Favorite Food: Coconut
  • Person Who Has Influenced You: My dad
  • Favorite Vacation: Anytime I go to my cabin
  • Favorite Quote: “Anyone can talk the talk, but can you walk the walk”

Last question: Why should someone send their induction work to AHT Burton versus our competition?

AHT has so many types of heat treat that having two different facilities so close together in Waterloo helps us to be a one stop destination, especially for logistical reasons. Throw in that we have a complete metallurgical and quality staff along with the amount of long-standing technicians and it’s not surprising we have so many customers that rave about our quality and overall service. Couple that with our new machines to improve turnaround and efficiency and we are a superb overall option.
