Q&As with Vasko Popovski
Vasko, where did you work before and how has your previous experience helped you in your new role at AHT?
I think it is important to say that I am a metallurgical engineer first and foremost. I have 25 years of metallurgical experience, including nine in heat treatment. This experience has involved opening doors with designers and purchasing professionals to new possibilities in materials. At AHT, we have a highly technical market offering that does some simply AMAZING things, and I look forward to leveraging this experience to help our customers to reach their best possible outcomes.
As Regional Sales Manager for AHT’s Michigan facility, what territories will you cover and what services do you provide?
I will be covering the Northeast USA, from Ohio to the Atlantic. Ontario, Canada also lands in this territory. Most of my work will be associated with UltraGlow® Ion Nitriding, UltraGlow® Gas Nitriding, and UltraOx® cycles. That said, I can be anywhere our customers want me to be.
When you’re not working, how do you like to spend your free time?
I enjoy spending time with my family. As I write this, I am planning on doing some fishing this very weekend. We will also be shooting some clays. Otherwise, I really like live music of any kind. You can add live theater and live sporting events to that mix; I think it’s important to be among people in our digital age.
You have had several written pieces published. What article do you think might be most beneficial to our customers?
The most recent piece that I co-authored is very practical: 10 Questions To Ask Your Casting Supplier. It appears in Metal Casting Design & Purchasing Magazine. This article helps purchasing professionals to make better, more-cost effective sourcing decisions. I hope to soon write a similar piece on purchasing of heat treatment.
What professional accomplishment are you most proud of?
I hope the answer is that I have earned the trust of my customers. I am happy to play a large or small role in the success of my company and my customers, just as long as we are all successful.
What is one thing people may not know about Vasko Popovski?
Every single day I need to spell my name for someone, somewhere.
We’ve heard you are quite the grill master. What do you like to grill?
Heat treat is all about heat and mass transfer. The same applies to grilling. I like to prepare Cayenne Candied Bacon outside for special occasions. It takes a long time despite the thin section size.

- First Job: Busboy at the Oak’s Lounge, Castle Shannon, PA.
- Favorite Food: Nothing beats my wife’s pancakes.
- Person Who Has Influenced You: My dad taught me to work without a safety net and to like people the way they are.
- Favorite Quote: I’m a big Pittsburgh Penguins fan, but Wayne Gretzky famously said, “You miss 100% of the shots you don't take.” That means you need to try before you can succeed. In America there is no penalty for trying.
