Q&As with Tim Zemaitis
Tim, while you just started at AHT this past June, you’ve been in the heat treat industry for over 20 years. Tell us about the different roles you’ve previously held.
I began my heat treat career at a southeast Michigan thermal treating facility. I started as a Customer Relations Associate. I held the following positions; Customer Service Manager, Metallurgical Engineer, Vice President of Sales, Heat Treat Technical Advisor, Vice President, and finally President and COO. I moved into the broaching industry, where I was the Senior Manufacturing Manager for a company in transition and then was promoted to President where I implemented, among other efficiencies, Lean Manufacturing. Most recently I was employed at a northwest Michigan heat treater where I held the positions of Market Segment Manager and Technical Operations and Customer Support Manager.
In your previous experience, what heat treatments did you work with?
I have experience with ion nitriding, vacuum hardening, salt bath heat treating, atmosphere heat treating, steam treating, black oxide treating and straightening processes.
When you’re not working, how do you like to spend your free time?
I enjoy the trials and successes of golf. I still play softball and generally most sports. I enjoy time with my family and gardening. I am also active with my church, where my wife is employed.
What professional accomplishment are you most proud of?
My professional accomplishments include: Contributor for Die Design Handbook Society of Manufacturing Engineers: Third Edition, 1990, Section 28, “Ferrous Die Materials” and having completed NSF International ISO 9001:2000 overview training. I am a founding Member ASM Heat Treating Society, a senior member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, as well as a SME: Cold Forming Technology Speaker, “Ion Nitriding Applications”. I am a member of ASM International, Detroit Chapter. I have designed, set up and equipped complete metallurgical laboratory’s, developed a stabilizing heat treatment processes for air hardening tool steels, developed nitriding pre-heat treatment procedure for tool steels, developed and negotiated ventures between major corporations, established growth through distribution center management, and implemented Toyota lean manufacturing system.
What is one thing people may not know about Tim Zemaitis?
I played several years on amateur golf tours. It was golf at a very entertaining level.
What were some of your first impressions at AHT?
AHT shows that business can succeed in a truly family atmosphere. My first impression was encouraged that the AHT team members spoke from their hearts when referencing the company. Everyone here is willing to assist each other so that everyone prospers.
Why would you recommend a prospective customer choose AHT over another heat treater?
AHT has superior quality, operates with honesty and has impeccable service. The communication is second to none.
